The Beginnings AND End of Saturn
For anyone who remembers the famous Saturn slogan of the 80’s, “A different kind of car”, what you probably don’t know is that Saturn was exactly that; different.
Originally meant to be a unique car of its own kind under one of the traditional names that General Motors housed (Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Chevrolet), it ended up being so much more, and acquired its own name and own identity.
It took nearly 3 years for the concept of Saturn as a brand-name to come to fruition. What started out as a simple idea in June of 1982, soon became a well-known car brand 8 years later after GM decided on what the brand and vehicle would be on January 7, 1985.
The Release of Saturn
On July 30, 1990, the first Saturn vehicle to leave the production line out of a Tennessee manufacturing plant was a bright red Saturn SL2, model year 1991. The first Saturn dealership to launch the new vehicle was in Memphis, and sales were phenomenal throughout the first year of operation.
By 1993, just three years later, the production plant had manufactured its 500,000th Saturn car. Only 2 more years later, Saturn had hit 1 million cars produced and sold. Shortly after this immense initial success, they launched the first electric car produced by GM, the EV-1.
Despite the fact that the vehicles were selling really, really well, it didn’t live up to the expectations that GM had put forth when starting up Saturn. The marketing division advised GM that over 40% of Saturn vehicle owners already owned a GM vehicle. Their finance team attributed the sales to the current recession that took place in the 90’s.
However, a peak in sales for Saturn resulted in a loss of sales for other GM brands like Chevrolet and Pontiac.
The End of Saturn
Even though sales were not as expected (although great), and GM was concerned about the drop in sales in the other brands that they carried, they continued to produce Saturn vehicles. In 2002, they launched the company’s first family minivan with the Saturn Vue.
Four years later, Saturn released the Saturn Sky which was to be the company’s first and only sports car, and a convertible at that. Unfortunately, all of the efforts of GM to keep Saturn afloat while maintaining sales targets of their other brands were unsuccessful.
In December of 2008, shortly after another recession began, GM announced publicly that they would be discontinuing Saturn, along with Pontiac, Hummer, and Saab. Their intent was to rebuild their traditional and better selling brands of Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac.
What Kinds of Vehicles Did Saturn Make?

Saturn Vehicle Warranties Still Covered By GM
If you were one of the many to purchase a Saturn vehicle back in the day, and if it’s still currently running, you may still have a warranty that covers certain repairs or replacements.
Although GM has stated that they will still honour customers’ warranties, they have advised consumers that they cannot guarantee repairs or replacements even under the warranty.
This is because with the discontinuation of Saturn vehicles and manufacturing, parts are incredibly hard to find.
Not only that, many of the parts that are available are much more costly than before due to their scarcity. So, if you are in need of major repair that GM can’t fix, and other avenues prove to be insanely expensive, sell your car to More Cash For Scrap instead. We always pay MORE!
